Gum Hygiene Treatment

Gum Hygiene Treatment

Gum Disease is alarmingly common, with an estimated 8 out of 10 people displaying symptoms of varying severity.

Gum disease occurs when the gum tissue becomes infected and it is the leading cause of natural tooth loss in adult patients.

Symptoms include:

  • Chronic halitosis (bad breath).
  • Bleeding while brushing and flossing.
  • Swollen and receding gums.
  • Loose teeth.

Causes of gum disease

When plaque builds up on your teeth and is not removed, tartar will form around and under the gum line, causing infection and the formation of periodontal pockets that collect even more bacteria.

As the condition progresses, your teeth can loosen and even fall out.

Gum disease prevention

Good oral hygiene practices, like those below, can prevent the onset of gingivitis and help to control symptoms until you can schedule a dental appointment.

    • Brushing: Make small, circular motions while holding the brush at a 45-degree angle and be sure to brush the entire surface of each tooth. Follow up with interdental brushing to remove debris that your regular brush can’t get to.
    • Flossing: Floss every day to remove stuck food and other debris that could cause infection.
    • Using fluoride gels and rinses: Fight off bacteria by using a disinfecting, flourish replenishing rinse.

Seeing your dentist at one of the Smile Clinic Group locations for preventive dentistry services will also help prevent the onset of Gum Disease.
